It's easy to get bogged down in the tech and spec soup of computer terminology, but there are a couple of key areas photographers need to think about. One last note, I currently pay $30 per month for the Adobe suite with student discount, and I could purchase Final Cut Pro X, Motion 5, and all of Apples “Pro Apps” for $200 with the student discount.Watch the video above for the top 7 things to consider when buying a laptop.

I realize that on paper the XPS 15 blows the MacBook out of the water in terms of raw specs but from what I can tell Final Cut Pro X (only available on Mac) is so well optimized for Mac that the spec difference may not mean a thing in the end and in fact may still render videos much faster than Premiere on the XPS. My plan is to return the XPS 13 in hopes of finding better render times in either: a 2018 MacBook Pro 13 inch (quad-core i7 8559u, 16gb ram, 512gb SSD, $2,300 after student discount) using Final Cut Pro X instead of premiere for the lower render times, OR keeping premiere and going with Costco’s current XPS 15 deal for $2,000 (i7 8750h, 1050ti max-Q, 32gb ram, 4K screen, 1TB SSD). I love everything about the laptop besides the rendering times and the size is great, and the screen in breathtaking. I realize the laptop performance won’t be on par with the desktop but a 5x slower render just seems unacceptable. However, exporting a 4.5 minutes clip with lumetri color in Premiere took 50 min compared to my desktops 11 minutes.

Last week I purchased the Dell at Costco ($300 off for $1399) with the i7 8550u, 16gb ram, 4K screen thinking that the upgrade to quad-core in 8th gen 15 watt CPUs would be enough to edit video.

This laptop edited video great but the almost 6lb weight and large size was just not doing it for me. My previous laptop was a Dell 7567 with the i7 7700HQ, 1050ti, 16gb ram, and a 4K screen.

I’m looking for a portable laptop for video editing 4K video and dragging around to college class all day. Hi, this is my first Reddit post so bear with me. Read the helpful sidebar and sticky post before posting! Include country, budget, and screen size in title! An "i5" 8300H is more powerful than either. The difference between an "i5" 8250U and "i7" 8550U is less than it might sound like. U-series vs H-series, and 2-core vs 4-core, mean more than Core i5 vs Core i7. Note: Sharp and OLED Samsung panels are true 4K. These have mostly been phased out, but are still present or available in some models. These trick consumers because the listed resolution numbers are the same, but the detail is less, and they produce artifacts.

Some laptops that list high resolutions (1440p through 4K) use "PenTile" RG/BW or WR/GB matrix panels instead of RGB/RGB.

Many IPS displays are far from perfect still. There may be other concerns too such as colorspace or response times. Many lower priced laptops, even in price ranges were decent displays are available. Many Thinkpads, Latitudes, Probooks with base screen options.

This is the case for many 1080p displays that aren't listed as IPS or 120Hz+, and nearly all displays 768p/900p. The quality is worse than IPS or good TN. Fill out the form here on your posts!
